    На основании учетов 2000-2012 гг., полного анализа опубликованных источников и дифференцированной экстраполяции полученных показателей обилия на малодоступные территории в ареале чешуйчатого крохаля Mergus squamatus (далее ЧК), численность мировой популяции вида оценена в 1940 пар (или 4660 особей в предгнездовой период). Выяснена конфигурация гнездового ареала: вид гнездится на 120 реках в России, Китае и Северной Корее, причем около 90 % современного ареала расположено на российской территории. Критический анализ фаунистических находок за исторический период позволил выявить ошибку в определении молодого крохаля, добытого на р. Деп Амурской области в 1976 г., который оказался большим крохалем M. merganser. Реального сокращения ареала ЧК в обозримый период на территории РФ не отмечено, тогда как в Северном Китае местообитания вида подверглись в последние десятилетия существенной деструкции.
